Daily 5 and CAFE

We started Daily 5 on Day 1 of first grade. Our first piece of Daily 5 is Read to Self. We worked together to create a chart for Read to Self Rules. This is what we came up with: Read silently. Get started right away. Read the whole time. Stay in one place. Work on building stamina. We will review these rules frequently over the next few weeks to make sure that we have a great atmosphere for reading.

We also learned about CAFE - Comprehension/Accuracy/Fluency/Extending Vocabulary. We know these are really BIG words for first graders, but each of these reading components are presented in kid friendly language, and they will become familiar with these terms over time. We even added our first few strategies to the CAFE menu board. Through mini-lessons the students learned how to use the pictures to help with understanding, to reread to make sure that we are reading correctly, and tune in to Interesting Words.

We will continue to build on the Daily 5 so that eventually students will be involved in all 5 literacy components - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, and Listen to Reading. For more information about the Daily 5, click on the
1D Literacy link on the right side of this blog.
