The Little Red Hen

This week we will read many different versions of The Little Red Hen. The 1D kids were introduced to the story on Friday. They viewed the version by Joseph Jacobs on Speakaboo.com , a great site for Listen to Reading. After watching and listening to that version, we read another traditional version of the story. Students also had their first opportunity to try Read to Someone. We learned that when we are sharing books, we need to sit EEK ~ elbow to elbow and knee to knee. This gives both partners a chance to see the book, and helps the students to focus on reading or listening. We will compare the various versions of The Little Red Hen, and this week the kids will find that there are some really unusual adaptations, such as Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, Help Yourself Little Red Hen, and Cock-a-Doodle-Doo. After reading, we will discuss the characters and setting for each story and we will look for connections between the books. Students will have the opportunity to take some of these books home for DEAR reading this week, so parents will have the chance to enjoy some Little Red Hen stories along with their 1D kid!
