The 1D Diamonds LOVED their field trip to Marmon Valley Farm! First graders were introduced to pioneer tools such as the fro, auger, mallet, and draw knife. They even had the opportunity to use some of these tools to create candleholders out of wood pieces. They also enjoyed a sampling of pioneer food - cooked over an open fire. The cook told the students that it would be important for pioneers to have a tinder box containing flint and a char cloth. The johnnycakes were delicious! The third station was candlemaking. The children dipped wicks into hot wax that had been melted over a campfire. After eating lunch outdoors the kids were eager to play in the hay barn. They visited with the farm animals and discovered their way through a maze of hay. |
